HELP with the WPS Computer System:

Click on a category below that best matches the problem
that you are having:
Internet Trouble:
- Try clicking on (or manually typing in) one of these web sites: www.EarthLink.net, Slashdot.org.
- If you see legitimate web pages at these sites, then the
Internet connection is working.
- If you do NOT get legitimate web pages, or you get an
error, then the connection
to the Internet is officially down & the WPS Technology Department
staff are likely working on it. If it doesn't resolve itself within 10
minutes, please call the WPS Technology Department (x195).
Printing
Trouble:
- Look at the printer that you expect the pages to to
come out of.
- If it has any errors (e.g. out of paper, paper jam,
etc.), then once you fix them, your document will print.
- If the printer doesn't blink any lights nor does it show any
errors on its screen then goto the next step.
- Check that you are printing
to the right printer?
- To do this, go to the "File" menu and choose the item
labeled "Print".
- In the top-center of the window that appears, you will see the
name of the printer that your paper will come out of. Be sure that the
name that appears on the screen, is the same name that the printer is
physically labeled.
- It should say something like "Local Printer", or
"FacultyLoungePR", or "Library1PR".
- Click on the button labeled "OK".
- Go to the printer that was listed in the window. If a page does
not begin printing after 2 minutes, then goto the next step.
- Shutdown & startup the computer.
- Many times, this will
make Windows start printing immediately.
- Print to a different printer:
- To do this, minimize your windows (by clicking on the low black
bar "_" in the far upper-right of the blue window frame) and
double-click on "SharedFolders".
- Double click on "zNetwork_Printers".
- After about 7 seconds, a list of printers will appear. Click
ONCE on the alternate printer that you want to print to. NOTE: You may
not have permission to print to all printers listed.
- Go to the "File" menu and choose the item labeled "Install...".
NOTE: It might be labeled "Connect...".
- Wait 30 seconds. NOTE: Microsoft Windows gives you NO feedback
that anything is going on. However, the computer is connecting to that
printer (installing drivers).
- Open the file that you want to print (or maximize the window
that you were working in).
- Go to the "File" menu and choose the item labeled "Print".
- At the top of the window that appears, click on black triangle
by the name of the printer.
- A list of more that one printer will appear. Pick the new
printer name from the list. NOTE: The pritner will be named something
like "\\PRINTSERVER\Library1PR".
- Click on the button labeled "OK".
- If the new printer still does not print your work, then call
the WPS Technology Department (x195).
Other Computer Troubles:
- Is the problem isolated to just the one computer that
you are sitting at?
- Try doing the same thing on a different computer. If the
problem is on more than one computer in your building, call the
Technology Department immediately (x195). If the problem is only on the
computer that you are sitting at, then continue to the next step.
- Do other programs still function?
- Try clicking on the "Start" menu, point to "Programs", then
point to "Accessories", then click on "Calculator".
- Look at the computer. Does the orange hard drive light on the
computer blink? Is it on solid? Note these things to aid in diagnosis.
- If the Calculator comes up, then the problem is limited to that
program. Try closing that program, then opening it again and trying the
operation one last time. If it fails, call the WPS Technology
Department (x195).
- Does your program still function, but it is not behaving
correctly?
- Shut down the computer, then turn it back on.
- If this did not resolve the problem, call the WPS
Technology Department (x195).
- If it did solve the problem, there may not be much that
the WPS Technology Department can do to prevent it from happening
again. There are only a few adjustments that the authors of programs
allow us to make.
